Fellow Ode Gen 2: burr options and cleaning

What burrs the Ode Gen 2 ships with, what the SSP upgrade changes, and how to keep single-dose burrs clean.

The Ode Gen 2 is a single-dose grinder aimed at filter and batch brewing, and Fellow is unusually clear about its burr options.

Gen 2 Brew Burrs vs the SSP upgrade

The Gen 2 ships with Fellow's Gen 2 Brew Burrs — 64 mm stainless steel flat burrs the company says grind as fine as ~250 microns, fine enough for tight pour-overs but well short of espresso range. Fellow also sells an upgraded SSP MP Brew Burr variant. If you buy, note which burr configuration the listing actually includes — pricing differs, and the upgrade is exactly the kind of purchase where you should confirm the current configuration and price at the merchant.

Cleaning routine

  • Single-dosing means the chamber empties every use — good news for freshness, less oil buildup.
  • Brush the chamber and both burr faces periodically; Fellow's anti-static design reduces retention, but a soft brush pass keeps it honest.
  • Never wash the burrs.
  • Check for retention under the burrs if your first-dose grind weights start drifting.

Not for espresso

Brew-burr geometry (standard or SSP MP) is designed for filter range. For espresso-capable grinding at lower budgets, Baratza's Encore ESP variant is documented by its manufacturer as espresso-capable.
