Moccamaster: descaling and the official cleaning routine

Why the 5-year-warranty Moccamaster still needs descaling, and which official products Technivorm sells for it.

Technivorm backs every Moccamaster with a 5-year warranty — an industry-leading figure — but that warranty assumes basic descaling, because every drip brewer scales with hard water.

Descaling

Technivorm sells its own descaling agent through the "Filters & Cleaning" section of its official store. Frequency depends on water hardness and brew volume; the manufacturer's cleaning products come with their own instructions — follow those rather than improvising with generic acids on a handmade machine. After any descale, run full tanks of fresh water before brewing for consumption.

Routine care

  • The glass carafe and hot plate: clean the carafe regularly; coffee oils bake onto hot-plate carafes and go rancid.
  • The brew basket is removable on the KBGV — rinse after every brew and clean the drip-stop mechanism so it seals properly for half-pot brews.
  • The water reservoir holds the brew path's first defense: use reasonably soft water and scale forms slower everywhere.

Parts availability

Official replacement parts — carafes, brew baskets, lids, and internal components — are sold directly by the manufacturer, which is unusual for a drip brewer and part of why these machines stay in service for decades.

See the KBGV Select page for verified specifications and the manufacturer store links.

Equipment in this guide

Safety: coffee equipment involves electricity, hot water, steam under pressure, and cleaning chemicals. Always unplug, cool down, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This guide is informational and is not a substitute for the official manual or qualified service.
