AeroPress: replacement seals and long-term care

The AeroPress is nearly indestructible — the seal is its one real wear part. What to replace, when, and where it comes from.

The AeroPress Original has essentially one wear part: the rubber plunger seal. Everything else tolerates years of abuse.

The seal

The seal is sold as an official replacement part through the manufacturer's shop. Replace it when: brewing pressure drops noticeably (the plunger slides with little resistance), the seal looks stiff or cracked, or coffee fines work past it. A seal that sits dry for a long time ages faster than one in regular use — plunger lubrication is just hot water before you press.

Filters

It uses paper micro-filters — cheap, and the reason the cup is so clean. Keep them dry until use. Reusable metal filter disks exist and change the cup character; the paper filter is the documented default the manufacturer designs around.

Body care

The chamber and plunger rinse clean in seconds. Avoid abrasive scrubbing on the chamber — scratches accelerate seal wear and create places for coffee residue to hide.

Travel

It's the best travel brewer precisely because nothing in it needs pampering — toss it in a bag with a sleeve of filters and a seal already in good condition.

Equipment in this guide

Safety: coffee equipment involves electricity, hot water, steam under pressure, and cleaning chemicals. Always unplug, cool down, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. This guide is informational and is not a substitute for the official manual or qualified service.
